2021 – The Year of Sustainability
22nd Jan 2021

Wow, what a year 2020 was! The year started with so much promise and before we could catch our breath, the world plummeted into chaos. Although these were very uncertain times we were facing with no blueprint on how to navigate these stormy waters, as a brand we had to ensure that we remained committed to our economic and sustainability objectives.

Through the support from our amazing Uzwelo family and you, our extended family, we as a team took this challenge head-on and still managed to redirect an estimated 3 tons of fabric from ending up in a landfill and utilised over 2 150m of rPET fabric.

Sustainability

But 2020 wasn’t all doom and gloom. As with our nature to pioneer, we’re constantly looking at ways in which we can grow our sustainability efforts, while ensuring we continue to offer our customers the highest quality sustainable products available in South Africa.

With this drive to make the most out of 2020, we developed our very own 100% rPET fabric through our partner House of Canvex exclusively for Uzwelo and the interior décor industry. Why is it exclusive you may ask? Well, unlike other manufacturers that utilise rPET yarn and fabric that is sourced from China, Indonesia and the likes. Our rPET yarn is made from 100% local South African PET waste and is exclusively supplied to us, which we weave into various base fabrics in-house. By utilising local waste, we are further creating job opportunities in our country, which is something we should all drive towards given the dire circumstances we are facing in SA.

What makes this fabric so revolutionary? Apart from the fact that it’s made from 100% recycled plastic, it offers a versatility like no other fabric with near endless possibilities in the interior décor space. Through our extensive R&D and consultation with industry experts, we have developed a range of base fabrics that can be utilised for upholstery, curtaining, cushions, table cloths, headboards, etc and are currently developing a solution for canvas wall coverings.

Sustainability

Uzwelo will now be offering a range of PRINTED CUSHION COVERS and RPET TABLE CLOTH SETS through our online platform, allowing you to completely transform your home, office, retail and hotel space that has a very special South African story weaved into it.

At Uzwelo, we’re all about championing local is lekker. The damage this pandemic has caused our local economy has us on a long, difficult road to recovery. As a brand and individuals, we have a moral obligation to support our local industry. South Africa has its’ own plastic pollution and unemployment problems, so let’s support local. Say no to China and support your local China.

So, the next time you’re in a retailer and you spot a product that claims it’s made from 100% recycled plastic, do your due diligence as a consumer and ask the question. Where does it come from? Why are they not supporting local?
