Giving Hope
28th Aug 2017

It seems like just yesterday that the people of Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and surrounding areas were greeted by the devastation caused by the “Knysna Fires” with some losing more than just their homes, businesses or schools.

Uzwelo by definition, means compassion and as a brand we couldn’t help but feel the need to help any in way, shape or form. During times of hardship, hope is something we as humans need to help us move forward and rebuild. The Uzwelo “Bag of Hope” was created with this in mind.

Many schools were destroyed by the fires, so Expand a Sign pledged 50 Bags of Hope and encouraged corporates and individuals to do the same. These bags would in turn be donated to the school children of Knysna High School, Knysna Primary School, Oakhill Primary School, Woodridge College, Fraaisig Primary School and Riverwood Primary.
In true South African form, we were overwhelmed by the amazing contributions made by both corporates and individuals with a total of 240 Bags of Hope being pledged. However, the goodwill did not end there… FutureLife donated 600kg of cereal to accompany the bags and our courier partners at DSV handled all the transport logistics.

Desmond Tutu said: “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness”. We hope that with this small gesture, we were able to offer those affected by the darkness caused by the Knysna Fires – a little light.
