#WRAD – World Read Aloud Day
7th Feb 2018

Taking part in #WRAD (World Read Aloud Day) at Egcekeni School, Shongweni was an intense experience.

Questions whizzed through my mind:

– Would the children enjoy the books I had selected?

– Would they relate and understand? – Would they respond to the experience?

– Would my Expand A Sign International colleagues enjoy their experience?

Well, I had to settle my nerves and push on. The end result was a rewarding one … for reader and listener! Reading aloud to a child is so beneficial for vocabulary and comprehension. Being able to read and understand lays a foundation for your school career and indeed life!

Just weeks before, we had visited the school to do a bag handout to the Grade R class. It left a good feeling inside knowing that these kids can now travel to and from school with a fantastic bag that has a built in poncho that covers both the child and books in case it rains. Hopefully we can continue our initiatives to help improve literacy and school life in South Africa.
